Here at Skyzack we are always thinking of how we can improve our carbon footprint, both inside and outside of the office. Every one of us has a carbon footprint, producing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere through our day to day activities. This in mind, we’re aiming to alter our carbon footprint by making better choices. In this blog, we’re going to share how we try to consider and reduce our impact on the environment on a day-to-day basis and work towards going ‘green’.

GO PAPERLESS

One of Skyzacks business morals is that we are always as paperless as possible. Beyond promo materials and necessities, we do everything digitally. Switching the stacks of paperwork for easily accessible digital files is simple way to create a more environmentally friendly workspace, helping reduce the Co2 emissions entering the earth’s atmosphere. Obviously, within a business, a small amount of paper usage is inevitable. In this case, you can employ small changes to the way you’re printing, such as making use of both sides of the paper.

RECYCLING

In 2019, it goes without saying; recycling bins are a necessity in the workplace. Recycling the appropriate waste helps to reduce the harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses that are released into the environment from landfill sites. It also helps preserve the world’s natural resources that are not infinite. We are currently finding ways to incorporate recycling into our own office, or taking things home to recycle if there is no other option.

INVEST IN RE USEABLE ITEMS (CUPS / MUGS / PLASTIC BAGS)

Investing in reusable items will always help contribute to your green footprint as it reduces the amount of unnecessary waste. Using a reusable coffee mug when travelling into work or popping into a coffee shop at lunch will always be much more environmentally friendly than using the cardboard cups you are given. Most places also give you a discount for using your own mug too – saving the environment AND money!

LUNCHTIMES

Along with reusable coffee cups, there are many ways you can change your eating and drinking habits at work to help the environment. One easy, cost effective method is bringing in leftovers in a reusable Tupperware. This way you reduce the amount of waste involved in buying an average meal deal, which are often packed in plastic. Secondly, if your office tends to have group lunches, or there is a canteen in your workplace, try introducing a meat free scheme for one or two days. You may not believe it but raising cows, pigs and chickens is one of the prime contributors to the production of greenhouse gas emissions.

TURN OFF LIGHTS AND PLUGS WHEN NOT IN USE

It may sound obvious, but you would be surprised at how many lights and plugs are left on in office buildings. Firstly, if you’re a small business it is more efficient to invest in laptops rather than desktop computers as they can use up to 80% less power. As desktop computers need to be plugged in at all times, laptops are much more resourceful as they do not need the ongoing source of power. Another obvious yet often missed point in offices is to turn things off when not in use. Just because you aren’t paying the electricity bills, it doesn’t mean you should forget about these things.

KEEP TRACK

It’s all well and good adopting these approaches to reducing you carbon footprint, but make sure you’re keeping track. You want to be able to see your progress as this will help you to see the areas in which you may want to think about being more efficient. Perhaps you can designate a ‘green team’ to keep on top of things, or have a recycling rota. Employers can also encourage staff with use of eco-friendly schemes, such as ‘bike to work’ etc.

Thank you for taking the time to read our thoughts on going green in the office. We hope we’ve helped you in your own journey to reducing your carbon footprint and shown you how easy it can be. We know we haven’t got everything covered and are always looking to improve, so would love to hear from you.
